Prepaid customers buy kWh before use and load a token or receive credit; postpaid customers receive a bill after a billing period. Prepaid gives closer spending control, while postpaid depends more on accurate meter readings and bill review.
Neither option changes the physical quality of supply. Your tariff band, feeder availability, wiring and distribution network still determine service conditions.
The essentials
- Whether the property has a functional approved meter.
- How arrears or legacy debt are assigned to the account.
- The tariff class and band printed on the bill or receipt.
- Who is responsible for the account in a rented property.
What to check first
Start with the evidence already in front of you. A precise account, meter, product or safety detail is more useful than guessing from the outcome alone.

Step by step
Work through the existing transaction, account or installation in order. Keep the reference and result from each step before moving to the next.
- Review three months of consumption or billing before comparing costs.
- Confirm any outstanding balance before moving in or changing responsibility.
- Choose the correct prepaid or postpaid option at checkout.
- Keep every receipt and compare kWh, deductions and opening or closing balances.
Mistakes to avoid
These shortcuts often turn a traceable problem into a second payment, a lost evidence trail or a safety risk.
- Assuming prepaid electricity is automatically cheaper per kWh.
- Treating a postpaid estimate as a meter reading.
- Accepting another occupant’s debt without notifying the DisCo in writing.
When to escalate
Report a faulty meter, unexplained debt or disputed bill to the serving DisCo with the meter or account number and supporting receipts. Escalate unresolved complaints through the regulator that currently covers your state.
Frequently asked
Does prepaid electricity mean there can be no debt?
No. A prepaid account may carry historical arrears, recovery charges or an agreed repayment plan that reduces the value delivered on later purchases.
Can a postpaid customer be billed by estimate?
Unmetered customers may receive estimated bills under the applicable methodology and caps. A bill should identify whether its reading is actual or estimated.
