Tamper error safety guide

Prepaid meter Tamper error: what to do and what not to touch

Respond safely to a prepaid electricity meter showing Tamper, terminal-cover or line/load warnings in Nigeria.

A Tamper message is a safety and integrity warning. It can relate to a terminal cover, magnetic interference, reversed wiring, bypass detection or another condition configured by the meter and utility.

Do not break the seal, open the meter or pay someone to bypass the warning. Record the display and report it through the official DISCO channel.

Keep this in mind

The essentials

  • Do not open, move, bridge or rewire the meter.
  • Photograph the display and sealed enclosure without exposing private account details publicly.
  • Switch off unsafe or damaged appliances if the incident followed an electrical fault.
  • A clear-tamper token may work only after the physical cause is resolved.
  • Keep the DISCO complaint reference and escalate through the regulator if unresolved.

Why the meter can enter tamper state

Modern meters monitor their sealed terminal area and electrical conditions. Conlog, for example, documents terminal-cover and line/load warnings among its protection features. The exact trigger must be diagnosed on the installed model.

Safe steps before reporting

Note when the message appeared, whether supply failed first, and whether there was recent authorised electrical work. Photograph the screen and visible seals from a safe distance. Do not attempt to reseat internal wires or remove a cover.

Why a clear-tamper token may be rejected

A token cannot correct a cover that is still open, damaged wiring or an unresolved installation condition. The DISCO or authorised technician may need to inspect and clear the physical trigger before issuing or applying the correct meter-specific token.

How to escalate a meter complaint

Start with the Customer Complaints Unit of the serving DISCO and keep the ticket. NERC’s published process allows escalation when the DISCO response is delayed or unsatisfactory, although some states now route complaints through their state electricity regulator.

Common questions

Frequently asked

Can low credit cause a Tamper error?

Low credit has its own warning on most meters. A Tamper message should be treated as a separate integrity or installation condition until the exact model response is confirmed.

Can I buy a token while the meter shows Tamper?

You can preserve your purchase, but the energy token may not restore supply until the tamper condition is resolved. Contact the DISCO before paying again or repeatedly entering codes.

Who can legally open a sealed meter?

Only the distribution company or its authorised metering representative should inspect or open sealed metering equipment.
