Meter care guide

Prepaid meter maintenance: safe checks for Nigerian homes

Keep a prepaid meter and CIU readable, dry and accessible without opening, bypassing or damaging sealed equipment.

Keep the meter area dry, ventilated and accessible; protect the customer interface from liquid and impact; record labels and receipts; and report heat, smell, damage or erratic behaviour. Internal maintenance is not a customer task.

A meter is utility equipment and a safety device. Cleaning should be limited to a dry external wipe when safe, with no removal of seals, covers or wiring.

Keep this in mind

The essentials

  • Moisture, insect activity, cracks or discoloration around the enclosure.
  • Loose sockets or extensions powering the CIU.
  • Repeated resets, blank screens or unexplained trips.
  • A clear meter label and accessible isolator.

What to check first

Start with the evidence already in front of you. A precise account, meter, product or safety detail is more useful than guessing from the outcome alone.

  • Moisture, insect activity, cracks or discoloration around the enclosure.
  • Loose sockets or extensions powering the CIU.
  • Repeated resets, blank screens or unexplained trips.
  • A clear meter label and accessible isolator.

Step by step

Work through the existing transaction, account or installation in order. Keep the reference and result from each step before moving to the next.

  • Keep objects and water away from the meter and distribution board.
  • Use the CIU only as instructed and store it safely.
  • Archive receipts and photograph the meter label.
  • Report visible damage or abnormal behaviour promptly.

Mistakes to avoid

These shortcuts often turn a traceable problem into a second payment, a lost evidence trail or a safety risk.

  • Spraying cleaner or insecticide into a meter or distribution board.
  • Painting over labels, vents or seals.
  • Allowing an unauthorised technician to open or bridge the meter.

When to escalate

For burning smell, heat, smoke, sparking or exposed conductors, move people away and use the emergency channel. For non-urgent faults, submit a dated report with photographs.

Common questions

Frequently asked

Should a customer service the inside of a prepaid meter?

No. Do not open or work inside sealed metering equipment. Internal inspection belongs to authorised personnel.

Can dust cause CIU problems?

Dust, damaged buttons or poor power can affect a customer interface, but communication errors can also be electrical or pairing issues. Clean only externally and safely.
