A meter can have enough credit and still disconnect supply to protect the installation. Low or high network voltage is different from using more power than the meter’s configured load can support.
The essentials
- Check whether neighbours also have weak, high or unstable supply.
- Switch off high-load appliances before attempting a safe reconnect.
- Allow overheated equipment time to cool.
- Do not bypass the meter or increase a limit yourself.
- Report repeated trips because wiring, voltage or the approved load may need inspection.
Low-voltage or under-voltage error
Ikeja Electric notes that a meter error can result from low voltage and advises waiting until voltage is normal. If the whole area has weak supply, the fault is unlikely to be fixed at the keypad. If only your premises is affected, report it for inspection.
Over-voltage or unstable supply
Switch off sensitive appliances and wait for stable utility supply. Repeated high-voltage conditions can damage equipment and should be reported as a network or installation safety issue.
Power or current overload
Turn off large loads such as water heaters, air conditioners, pumps, cookers or several heavy appliances operating together. After reducing load, follow only the normal reconnect instruction for your meter model.
Thermal overload
Heat may come from excessive current, poor connections or environmental conditions. Do not touch a hot meter or enclosure. Isolate customer appliances where safe and call the DISCO or emergency service if there is heat, smoke, arcing or a burning smell.
When the approved load may be too small
If normal appliance use repeatedly trips the meter, ask the DISCO or a qualified electrician to assess the installation and approved load. Do not modify meter settings or protection equipment yourself.

Will buying more units stop an overload trip?
No. Credit balance and instantaneous electrical load are different. Reduce the connected load and resolve any installation fault.
Why does the meter trip when the air conditioner starts?
The starting current or combined household load may exceed the configured limit, or there may be a wiring or appliance fault. Reduce other loads and seek inspection if it continues.
Should I keep trying to reconnect during low voltage?
No. Wait for stable supply and protect appliances. Repeated reconnection does not correct the network voltage.
