CIU communication fix

Prepaid meter Link Error: how to reconnect the CIU or UIU

Safe steps for a prepaid meter keypad showing Link Error, Connect, failed pairing or no communication in Nigeria.

A Link Error usually means the indoor keypad cannot communicate with the sealed meter. It does not automatically mean that the meter is empty or that a newly purchased token is bad.

The correct pairing sequence varies by model, so begin with connection checks that are safe across common split meters.

Keep this in mind

The essentials

  • Confirm there is utility supply to the meter.
  • Power the CIU with the approved mains connection or fresh batteries.
  • Use a socket on the same meter circuit—not an inverter, generator or unrelated apartment circuit.
  • Pair only with the sequence published for your exact meter.
  • Report a persistent link failure as a possible CIU, meter or supply fault.

Why a split-meter keypad loses its link

Power-line CIUs communicate through the building wiring, while some wireless interfaces use radio. Alternative power, an extension, distance, phase separation, a replacement keypad or loss of utility supply can interrupt that path.

Safe connection checklist

Plug the CIU directly into a working wall socket served by the same meter. Change over from inverter or generator to utility supply where required. If the meter has no credit, fit the batteries recommended for the CIU. Remove unnecessary extensions and retry close to the meter when safe.

Pair the correct meter—not a nearby one

Use the serial number printed on your meter and the pairing method published by your DISCO. Conlog’s official guidance, for example, tells customers to enter the meter serial number when the CIU displays its pairing prompt, but its error codes also show that a unit can already be paired or have an encryption mismatch.

When to stop troubleshooting

If the UIU remains blank with known-good power, the meter has visible damage, there is a burning smell, or pairing continues to fail, disconnect only the portable interface if safe and report the fault. Do not open either sealed equipment or distribution wiring.

Common questions

Frequently asked

Can an inverter cause a prepaid meter Link Error?

Yes for some power-line CIUs. DISCO guidance warns that the interface may need a socket directly on the meter’s utility-supply circuit rather than an inverter or alternative source.

Will a new electricity token fix Link Error?

No. The communication link should be restored first. Buying another token does not repair pairing and can create an unnecessary second purchase.

Can I use any replacement CIU?

No. It must be compatible with the meter and correctly paired. Contact the DISCO or authorised meter provider for a lost or faulty interface.
