Prepaid meter errors in Nigeria: what each message usually means

Understand common prepaid meter messages including Link Error, Reject, Used, Tamper, Overload, low voltage and not commissioned.

Meter displays are short, so one word can represent several possible causes. Treat the message as a category to investigate, then confirm the exact meaning in the manual or DISCO guide for your model.

This directory covers the common customer-safe checks. It does not replace a technician for sealed wiring, tamper, burned equipment or a blank meter.

Keep this in mind

The essentials

  • Link or Connect usually points to communication between a separate keypad and meter.
  • Reject or Not Valid can mean the token is wrong, out of sequence, for another meter or affected by a required key update.
  • Used or Duplicate means the meter has already recorded that token.
  • Overload and voltage errors require reducing load or waiting for stable supply—not repeated token entry.
  • Tamper and hardware faults should be reported without opening the meter.

Link Error, Connect, PLC CON or no communication

The separate CIU or UIU cannot reach the meter. Confirm utility power is present, power the keypad as instructed, use a wall socket on the meter’s own circuit, avoid an inverter or extension where the DISCO warns against it, and move the interface closer if it uses radio.

Reject, Invalid, Not Valid or Not Suitable

Re-enter the digits carefully and confirm the token receipt belongs to the exact meter. Load earlier unused tokens first. If key-change tokens were issued, use the order supplied by the DISCO. A token marked not suitable may belong to another meter or device configuration.

Used or Duplicate

The same token has already been entered. Check the balance or token history instead of purchasing again. If the balance did not change, give support the receipt and meter details so they can trace the token state.

Tamper, terminal-cover or line/load warning

Do not remove the seal or attempt a bypass. Confirm there has been no obvious accidental damage, then report the exact display to the DISCO. A clear-tamper token or technician inspection may be required after the physical cause is resolved.

Overload, overcurrent, thermal trip or frequent disconnect

Switch off high-load appliances and allow the meter to cool if applicable. If normal supply does not return after reducing the load and following the model’s safe reconnect process, contact the DISCO or a qualified electrician. Never increase protection limits yourself.

Under-voltage, over-voltage or generic Error

Ikeja Electric notes that a generic meter error can result from low voltage. Wait for stable utility supply and retry only the display or balance check. If neighbours have normal voltage while your meter remains in error, report it.

Not commissioned, not activated or first recharge fails

A newly installed meter may need activation or commissioning tokens before it accepts energy. Contact the serving DISCO with the installation form and meter number. Do not buy repeated energy tokens while activation remains incomplete.

Common questions

Frequently asked

Is there one error-code list for every prepaid meter in Nigeria?

No. Messages and keypad codes vary by manufacturer, model and DISCO configuration. Identify the exact meter before following a brand-specific instruction.

Can I reset a prepaid meter myself?

You can perform customer instructions officially published for your model, such as entering supplied key-change tokens. Do not open, rewire, unseal or physically reset the metering unit.

Who repairs a faulty electricity meter?

Report it to the distribution company serving the property. NERC guidance assigns repair or replacement of a confirmed faulty meter to the distribution licensee, subject to investigation of damage responsibility.
