Meter debt explained

Why prepaid meter debt reduces your electricity units

Understand debt recovery on a Nigerian prepaid meter receipt and separate tariff, arrears, tax and delivered kWh.

A prepaid purchase can be divided between current energy and an account debt or recovery plan. Read the receipt line by line to see the gross payment, deductions and net value converted into kWh.

A payment platform passes through the vending result; it does not create or remove the electricity-account debt. Disputes about who owns the debt or how it was calculated belong with the serving DisCo.

Keep this in mind

The essentials

  • Gross amount paid and transaction reference.
  • Arrears, debt recovery, tax or other separately stated deductions.
  • Net energy value and kWh delivered.
  • Whether the debt predates the current tenant or customer.

What to check first

Start with the evidence already in front of you. A precise account, meter, product or safety detail is more useful than guessing from the outcome alone.

  • Gross amount paid and transaction reference.
  • Arrears, debt recovery, tax or other separately stated deductions.
  • Net energy value and kWh delivered.
  • Whether the debt predates the current tenant or customer.

Step by step

Work through the existing transaction, account or installation in order. Keep the reference and result from each step before moving to the next.

  • Retrieve the full vending receipt.
  • Add the stated deductions and compare them with the gross amount.
  • Request the debt ledger or repayment basis from the DisCo if unclear.
  • For a new tenancy, notify the DisCo in writing that the prior debt belongs to another customer.

Mistakes to avoid

These shortcuts often turn a traceable problem into a second payment, a lost evidence trail or a safety risk.

  • Assuming fewer kWh always means the payment platform withheld money.
  • Buying repeatedly to test whether the deduction disappears.
  • Ignoring debt history before renting or buying a property.

When to escalate

Send the distributor the receipt, account details, tenancy or ownership evidence where relevant, and the exact deduction being disputed. Ask for the account ledger and written resolution.

Common questions

Frequently asked

Can a former tenant’s electricity debt follow a new tenant?

NERC’s billing FAQ says a new occupant should notify the DisCo in writing so outstanding debt can be assigned to the appropriate customer.

Can PayTavo remove meter debt?

No. Debt and recovery rules are maintained on the electricity account by the serving distributor. PayTavo can show the vending result and receipt.
