Rejected token guide

Electricity token not working? Check these causes first

Troubleshoot an invalid or rejected prepaid electricity token, including meter details, key-change tokens and debt deductions.

Receiving a token does not always mean the meter will accept it. A rejected token can result from a typing error, a meter mismatch, token order, a meter update requirement or a distribution-company issue.

Do not publish or forward the full token while asking for help. Treat it like a private purchase credential.

Keep this in mind

The essentials

  • Confirm all token digits and enter them without spaces if the meter requires it.
  • Check that the receipt belongs to the exact meter number.
  • Some meters require key-change tokens to be loaded in order before the energy token.
  • Meter debt can reduce units, but it does not normally change the token digits.

Check the meter number on the receipt

Compare the receipt with the physical meter or a previous successful receipt. If the token was generated for another meter, repeatedly entering it will not fix the mismatch.

Re-enter the token carefully

Clear the keypad entry, type every digit again and wait for the meter response. If the meter uses a customer interface unit, make sure it has power and is communicating with the meter.

Look for key-change tokens

During meter-security updates, a receipt may include two key-change tokens plus the energy token. They usually have to be loaded in the displayed order. Skipping or reversing that order can cause rejection.

Know the difference between an invalid token and fewer units

If the token loads but the units are lower than expected, inspect the receipt for tariff, VAT, arrears or debt deductions. Those values are set through the electricity billing system and should be explained separately from the payment fee.

Escalate without exposing the token

Share the transaction reference, masked meter number, distribution company and exact meter error. Send the full token only through the official secure support channel if it is specifically required.

Common questions

Frequently asked

Can an electricity token expire?

Standard prepaid energy tokens are generally tied to a meter rather than a short countdown, but meter changes or security-key updates can affect acceptance. Confirm with the distribution company for the specific meter.

Why did I receive fewer units than expected?

Tariff bands, VAT and outstanding meter debt can affect the unit value. Review the receipt breakdown before assuming the token is incorrect.

What are key-change tokens?

They are meter update codes that may need to be entered before the electricity token. Follow the order supplied on the receipt or by the distribution company.
